14/15 Fantasy Premier League: Week 1 Recap

Here we are back again for another season of Premier League (@premierleague) football.

Of course, this also means we have kicked off the annual fantasy festivities.

And, as usual, we start the year off with a host of complaints regarding the latest (annual?) Yahoo! overhaul.

As stated in my previous post, prior to the start of the season, there were a lot “fixes” applied to the Yahoo! format that players were looking forward to: scaling the squad budget back to £100m from £150m, removing the captain’s armband, points reintroduced for winning corners, etc.

However, now that we are through the first week, I have a few questions:

  • Why are some player prices still absurdly high? The last time Yahoo! used a £100m squad budget, they had yet to incorporate a substitutes bench into their fantasy game. With a required 15 player selections per game week, it is a bit ridiculous to see the likes of Rooney (@WayneRooney) and Sturridge (@D_Sturridge) hovering somewhere around £20m after the first week.
  • Why am I unable to view the squads of other players I am directly competing against?
  • Has the global game been removed entirely? I want to know my global rank!

Speaking of global ranks, early in the morning prior to the kickoff for Sunday’s games, Yahoo! glitched out and opened a three-hour window where the prices of a few new additions to the Premier League – including Alexis Sánchez (@Alexis_Sanchez), Diego Costa, and Thibaut Courtois (@thibautcourtois) – all dropped to £5m, providing a huge boost to those who were up early and lucky enough to catch it.

Not sure how Yahoo! plans to fix that one but what an utter disaster. If I’m being honest, disaster has become a bit of a Yahoo! specialty of late. They seem to have problems with every one of their games, albeit none as glaring as the ones we suffer playing fantasy football year after year (no handegg).

EDIT: Yahoo! has addressed almost all of my concerns with this blog post. They’ve also created a fix for the pricing errors. Check it out before the start of week 2 or you’ll miss out!!

On the other hand, the official Premier League fantasy game continues to run like a well-oiled machine.

It is, after all, the game that has set the standard, as well as being the model that has turned the Yahoo! game into a total clusterfuck due to poor imitation.

Saying all of that, I definitely didn’t have a great opening week. First week of the season is always the toughest, if you ask me.

Let’s take a look.

Not in terrible shape but still work to be done.

It’s definitely going to be a lot more difficult in the Yahoo! game this year – last season was a relative breeze – and the official game gets tougher with each year as the game continues to grow worldwide.

Now: onto the important stuff…

Never forget…

How did you make out in Gameweek 1???
