Fantasy Premier League: Week 26 Recap / Week 27 Player Picks

The last week of Premier League (@premierleague) fantasy football was a real bastard.

With a couple postponements, I was left with my third week in a row in Yahoo! where I finished around 50 points.

That means, I am now sitting just within the top 3000 – bad time to start dropping off.

On the other hand, things work out favourably in the official league and I actually scraped my way back into the top 300k in that format.

Meanwhile, Arsenal (@Arsenal) look to get back on track today after their nil-nil draw versus Manchester United (@ManUtd) and 0-2 Champions League (@ChampionsLeague) defeat to Bayern Munich (@FCBayernEN).

My week 26 fantasy results are just after the jump.

Fantasy Premier League: Week 25 Recap / Week 26 Player Picks

Liv5-1Ars

What an absolutely dismal performance from the Gunners over the weekend.

Those of us who thought we had seen the worst of¬†Arsenal‘s¬†(@Arsenal) season when we were lucky enough to escape St. Mary’s with a 2-2 draw could not have been prepared for this.

20 minutes into the match and the score was already 4-0 in favour of Liverpool (@LFC).

Basically, we saw the exact opposite of the Reds who were stymied upon their last visit to the Emirates.

The annoying part is that in one match, all of the Gooners are in complete disarray.

Never mind the fact that we just had a 10-game unbeaten run snapped or that we only sit one point out of first (thanks to Man City [@MCFC] and their scoreless draw against Norwich City [@NorwichCityFC].. huh???)

Nope, once again, we are hearing the incessant calls of #WengerOut!

Unfortunately, this clown seems typical of most Arsenal fans

Unfortunately, this clown seems typical of most Arsenal fans

I have even been hearing digs taken at the “suddenly shaky” central defensive pairing of Per Mertesacker¬†(@mertesacker) and Laurent¬†Koscielny¬†– the duo that hadn’t lost in two years when they completed 90 minutes together. Think about that!

Granted, they were utterly dismantled in this match but I think one bad display out of 32 in total isn’t cause for immediate concern.

Don’t get me wrong, there are things that have frustrated me about the club that were typified on Saturday – why does¬†Ars√®ne Wenger¬†seemingly refuse to use his substitutes prior to the 60th minute? Why can’t the team convert from the corners? Why has he taken to starting Nacho Monreal ahead of¬†Kieran Gibbs¬†(@KieranGibbs) at left back? Why did he, once again, allow his personal distaste for the winter window prevent him from properly reinforcing his squad?

All legitimate questions but none that come close to justifying talks of a sacking.

Fickle, fickle, AFC fans.

I do believe the absence of Aaron Ramsey (@aaronramsey) is beginning to take its toll on the rest of the team and had Mathieu Flamini been available, I think it would have painted quite a different picture in midfield.

People (including Wenger himself) like to reference the fact that Flamini played during the 6-3 loss to Manchester City (@MCFC) but I like to think that he was still recovering mentally from the SLEEVEGATE row.

Although he has accepted his role with grace, Mikel Arteta (@m8arteta) continues to show that he is not truly built for a holding midfield role.

And Jack Wilshere (@JackWilshere) continues to play like a spoiled brat, flopping and throwing tantrums like a petulant child.

Having said that, he was the only one on Saturday to display any sort of emotion that would indicate an acknowledgement of the performance being unacceptable on the whole.

After such a humbling and humiliating defeat, I would hope we will see a vastly re-charged and re-focused Arsenal side showing up against United (@ManUtd) tomorrow.

But before we get there, can anyone let me know if they are able to find¬†Mesut √Ėzil¬†(@MesutOzil1088) anywhere?

Would love to see him again soon!

That makes two below average weeks back-to-back and it is pretty disheartening.

Just as I felt I was beginning to make up some ground at a crucial point in the season, my picks work out all wrong.

Hoping to scrape back up the standings with these midweek fixtures but can’t say I’m ultra confident this time around, at least not particularly in the FPL picks (handcuffed myself with my wildcard a couple weeks ago).

A little nervous.

I was on pace to have my best fantasy season yet, in either format, and while its looking like I might still maintain the pace in Yahoo!, the official format continues to present the biggest challenge.

How are you doing so far in fantasy this year?

Fantasy Premier League: Week 23-24, In Three Parts

I've fallen and I can't get up!

I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!

It’s been difficult to get back into the groove of things this year as the calendar has opened with a bit of a hectic start.

I’m still trying to catch up but have no plans of abandoning this blog.

My fantasy football posts are easily my most popular in terms of numbers and geographical appeal so I appreciate your patience and repeat visits.

No excuses really and I will continue to get myself back into the swing of things in the coming weeks.

It has been a lot of fun going through the year with all of you and I don’t think it is a coincidence that these blog posts have coincided with my best fantasy performances (thus far) to date.

It’s been cathartic, yo!

After a brief drop, Arsenal (@Arsenal) reclaimed top spot in the table and sit two points clear after Chelsea (@chelseafc) defeated Man City (@MCFC) yesterday at the Etihad.

But with the Blues taking on a weakened and Cabaye-less Newcastle (@NUFCOfficial) and the Citizens visiting Norwich (@NorwichCityFC) this weekend, the Gunners will need to be at their best when they visit Anfield in order to leave with the three points.

So, pretty good in the official format, although it always stings when you bench big performances like I did this time around with Mannone and Bardsley (11 and 10 points respectively).

It is truly amazing to see what Gus Poyet has managed to do since taking over at Sunderland (@SAFCofficial).

On the other side of things, I had my worst week in Yahoo! this season, having only managed a measly 55 points.

That said, I think just about everyone had a poor week in that format as I didn’t slip too deep in the standings.

How about the rest of you?
