Fantasy Premier League: Week 18 Recap / Week 19 Player Picks

After a brief drop, Arsenal (@Arsenal) are back to the top.

Their trip tomorrow to St. James’ Park notwithstanding, the Gunners have some very winnable fixtures on the horizon.

After a challenging December loaded with tough matchups, their top four rivals are about to face the same types of challenges in January, with many of them facing off against one another.

This is an opportunity for AFC to gain some ground and separate from the rest of the pack.

Making a statement versus Newcastle (@NUFCOfficial) would do a lot to bolster the confidence moving forward.

Week 18 recap after the jump.

Slight slip in the official game, incremental gains in the Yahoo! format, despite losing my grip on first spot in my second private league.

I was knocked out of the cup game in the official format in the first week AGAIN, something that seems to be a consistent thing for me year after year.

With the always crowded slate of fixtures at the end of the calendar, it’s a difficult time in fantasy due to the risk of player rotation.

Rooney¬†(@WayneRooney) didn’t even make the bench today so the aforementioned rotation risk has already bitten me in the ass.

Hopefully, the midweek injury to¬†Aaron Ramsey¬†(@aaronramsey) will mean that Arsenal won’t be able to afford giving¬†√Ėzil¬†(@MesutOzil1088) a deserved rest. Would be great to get him off of my bench and produce in place of good ol’ Shrek.

Januzaj¬†also won’t be making the start today so hopefully my subs work out in the official game, assuming he doesn’t come on at all.

I finally broke away from Giroud (@_OlivierGiroud_) in the official game, as his dip in form will likely see him being rested this weekend as well.

I’m really not sure what to expect this time out, as it’s usually a bit of a guessing game during this time of year.

Guess we’ll find out in a couple of days!

Fantasy Premier League: Week 17 Recap / Week 18 Boxing Day Player Picks

Thanks to the dildo Mike Dean (pictured above), Arsenal (@Arsenal) only managed a nil-nil draw versus Chelsea (@chelseafc) this past weekend.

The referee and his assistants failed to show the red card for two recklessly high challenges against Mikel Arteta (@m8arteta).

In the first instance,¬†Mikel¬†wasn’t even given a booking at all.

Sickening stuff.

No sending off for this, either.

And finally, a sure penalty shout was also not given.

Very disappointing when a game is decided due to such poor officiating.

It has been apparent for some time that Dean is not a fan of Arsenal.

This match just seemed to be a blatant form of further confirmation.

Let’s not forget this embarrassment:

Arsenal now share the league lead on points with Liverpool (@LFC) ahead on goal difference.

The Gunners have a chance to regain the lead in full with a visit to Boleyn Ground while Liverpool face a real test at the Etihad.

Let’s recap week 17 in fantasy football.

Pretty good week.

In the official game, I had my highest points total of the season thus far and in Yahoo!, I finally took over the lead in my second private league.

Incremental gains in the overall rankings in both formats but still loads of work to be done.

But with that behind us now, it is back to the important things in life, like football!

Already a bit behind the 8-ball to begin with.

Moyes certainly has a thing for giving late fitness updates.

Phil Jones (@Ph1lj0nes) has been ruled out for a minimum of two weeks with a knee injury which puts a dent in my Yahoo! backline.

Hull (@hullfcofficial) and United (@ManUtd) are already running wild with their fixture sitting at 2-2 at half time.

Rooney (@WayneRooney) is already on a goal and an assist having just become only the second player in Premier League (@premierleague) history to score 150 goals with a single club (the first being Arsenal legend, Thierry Henry).

I was a bit lucky though as I brought Januzaj into the official game only to see him start on the bench.

However, he was brought on in the 18th after Rafael picked up a knock.

The big trouble for me is that both¬†Giroud¬†(@_OlivierGiroud_) and¬†√Ėzil¬†(@MesutOzil1088) are big rotation risks this gameweek and next, so we’ll see how that works out for me.

Lots of football over the next week though.

Just have to wait and see how the chips fall.

Fantasy Premier League: Week 17 Player Picks

Can you believe we are already just about halfway through the 2013-14 Premier League (@premierleague) campaign?

I have to say, each calendar year seems to go by faster than the one previous.

Not sure I’ll ever get used to that (that = getting old).

So, this last slate of fixtures prior to the Christmas holiday begins with Cardiff (@CardiffCityFC) making the trek to Anfield to take on Liverpool (@LFC) and man-of-the-moment, Luis Suárez (@luis16suarez).

The aforementioned is already on two goals and an assist at the half and has all but sealed Malky Mackay‘s fate as the next BPL manager to suffer a very harsh sacking.

However, Suárez has been making a habit lately of completely dismantling the opposition and putting their weaknesses on full display.

His second goal of the day was an absolute cracker.

Remember when¬†Ars√®ne Wenger¬†made that cheeky¬†¬£40,000,001 bid and I said I’d hate to see such a scumbag wearing¬†Arsenal¬†(@Arsenal) red?

Yeah, about that…

Luis is now on 19 goals for the season and is currently one shy of taking the record for most scored in a single season prior to Christmas.

Speaking of the Gunners, the big game versus Chelsea (@chelseafc) will conclude week 17 with a Monday match at the Emirates.

The three points are more crucial than ever now as it looks as if the Reds will sit top of the table before the rest of the fixtures kick off today at 10am EST.

Let’s have a look at the fantasy squads this time around.

After all the Suárez talk, naturally, he was selected as captain in both formats.

To be quite honest, barring injury, it could stay that way for the remainder of the season.

He already sits at¬†¬£13m in the official format and I would expect his price to soar past¬†¬£40m in the Yahoo! game after today’s performance.

Of course, everyone else has him as well so giving him the armband is just a matter of maintaining the pace.

In Yahoo!, I have been holding Rooney (@WayneRooney) at a fairly substantial discount and took a bit of a risk sticking with him this week as he was listed as a doubt due to a groin injury.

However, the gamble paid off, as United (@ManUtd) just announced that he will be in the XI today.

Moyes needs to work on the psychology a bit, as the last time he was vague about an injury pertaining to van Persie (@Persie_Official), RVP ended up playing.

It seemed similar to the way he was deflecting questions about Rooney this week and thankfully, my intuition proved correct.

I wanted to get Giroud (@_OlivierGiroud_) into both formats but only managed to keep him in the official game.

He’s been quiet over the past month and I’m expecting him to put away at least two versus the Blues.

In¬†Ag√ľero‘s¬†(@aguerosergiokun) absence, I replaced him in the Yahoo! game with¬†√Ālvaro Negredo (@_AlvaroNegredo_) who has a chance to really assert himself over the next month.

Cardiff have since put one past Mignolet (@SMignolet) so what I would have assumed to be a sure clean sheet has now been lost on me.

Overall, I am hoping to have enough balance in both games to finish strong before the big Boxing Day games close out the calendar.

What Do Your XIs Look Like for Gameweek 17???

Fantasy Premier League: Week 16 Recap

It’s been a tough week for¬†Arsenal¬†(@Arsenal) FC.

After drawing Everton (@Everton) 1-1 at Goodison Park, the Gunners proceeded to concede the top spot in their Champions League (@ChampionsLeague) group by losing to Napoli (@sscnapoli) in what was arguably their worst game of the 2013/14 campaign, and followed that up with a 6-3 drubbing at the hands of Manchester City (@MCFC) Рeven though it could have easily ended 6-6 if not for the terrible officiating courtesy of Martin Atkinson and his assistants.

We also lost Koscielny to injury, who suffered a nasty deep cut to his knee, and Wilshere (@JackWilshere) is subject to face disciplinary action for making an obscene gesture towards the home supporters at the Etihad.

On top of that, we drew the Tottenham Hotspurs (@SpursOfficial) in the third round of the FA Cup (@FA) and, thanks to the pathetic performance against Napoli, we now face Bayern Munich (@FCBayernEN) in the Champions Final 16.

The lackluster Premier League (@premierleague) performances of late have seen our lead at the top of the table shaved to 2 points with the other big clubs beginning to heat up.

I think we have it in us to defeat¬†Chelsea¬†(@chelseafc) on the 23rd, although it’s a fact that Wenger has yet to claim victory over a Mourinho side throughout the duration of his managerial career.

After silencing the majority of their critics with top performances this season, the Arsenal pessimists and naysayers are vocal once again, insisting that we are beginning to see the “real” AFC.

I’m not sure how one of the most consistent sides in world football always ends up with underdog status but I digress.

The lack of silverware is glaring but our start to the season is no fluke.

The quality is there and I think the squad had run out of gas over the course of this very difficult and congested slate of recent fixtures.

Nevertheless, the belief remains and I would expect the Gunners to finish out the calendar in strong fashion.

Onto the fantasy!

As you can see, I am still paying a dear price for not getting Suárez (@luis16suarez) into my official game squad sooner.

Not having him during his outburst versus Norwich (@NorwichCityFC) killed my chances of competing for the rest of the season in a single gameweek.

I have held Suárez on a deep discount in the Yahoo! format for some time now, but in hopes of making some gains this past week with a differential pick, I foolishly swapped the armband to Rooney (@WayneRooney), who burned me for the second time in recent memory as captain.

Of course, Suárez Рwearing the armband in real life for the first time for Liverpool (@LFC) Рresponded by potting two and setting up three at White Hart Lane.

I was born with the luck of the Irish, what else can I say?

Funnily enough, I made a slight increase in the official game while slipping slightly in Yahoo!

I gotta…

Finally made more than one transfer in the same gameweek in the official format. I am beginning to realize that the -4 point penalty is a small sacrifice to make for a 20-30 overall point increase.

In any case, not having Suárez (@luis16suarez) in week 14 practically destroyed my season so I had to get him in from this point on.

Still pleased with my performance in the Yahoo! game but am hoping to get into the top 1000 before the end of the year.

Fantasy Premier League: Week 14 Recap

Okay, so I’m fucked.

At least, I’m fucked when it comes to the official game.

All because I didn’t select the maniac pictured above to be in my squad.

I’ve had him in my Yahoo! XI for a while now but I’m kicking myself for not bringing him into the other format when I used my wildcard.

Dumb, dumb. DUMB.

After these midweek matches, with Suárez (@luis16suarez) having bagged four goals + an assist, my chance of a respectable finish in the official PL game has vanished in the blink of an eye.

Crushing blow.

Arsenal¬†(@Arsenal) collected another three points but I’m too bummed to elaborate any further.

Fuck it, let’s just revisit the squads and get on with it.

I dropped 400,000 places in the official game, can you believe that shit!!

Just about everyone else had the racist biter so I’m fucked!

I won’t make that mistake again, you pretty much need him to compete this year.

So much for captaining¬†Giroud¬†(@_OlivierGiroud_)! I knew he was a rotation risk but I thought he’d at least make an appearance!

Bendtner (@bendtnerb52) scoring in the 2nd minute sort of changed all of that!

And¬†Rooney¬†(@WayneRooney) wasn’t shit!!

I was wise enough to captain Suárez in Yahoo! but I still slipped a little in the overall rankings thanks to an extremely poor performance from the back line.

I’m upset!

I’ll be back Saturday morning and hopefully in more of a positive mindstate!!
